Couponing at Walgreens

Walgreens can be a fantastic store to coupon at! This drugstore offers weekly sales & promotions on a wide variety of products – everything from personal care & beauty products to health care items, household essential and even food! Just be warned that at first glance – Walgreens can seem downright CONFUSING since there is a lot to get familiar with! Don’t panic! This guide will walk you through couponing at Walgreens without any confusion.

Before you start – Read the Walgreens Coupon Policy!

Like any store, the first thing you should be doing is reviewing the Walgreens coupon policy. I’ve included a few major highlights below. You can view the entire policy by clicking here. I also suggest rereading the policy after you have read this post and have a better understanding of the rewards programs and lingo.

  • The number of manufacturer coupons, including Register Rewards®/Savings Rewards manufacturer coupons, shall not exceed the number of items in the transaction. The total value of the coupons shall not exceed the value of the transaction. Sales tax must be paid, if required by state law.
  • Walgreens will not accept coupons that exceed the selling price of an item and no cash back is ever provided in exchange for any coupons.
  • For offers when multiple items are purchased and additional items are free (buy 1 get 1 free; buy 2 get 1 free, etc.), the number of coupons applied to that offer cannot exceed the number of items required in the “buy” portion of the offer.
  • Coupons may not be applied against any free item received in any offer
  • When items are featured in a Buy 1 Get 1 Free promotion, at least one product needs to be purchased. A maximum of one BOGO coupon is permitted per two qualifying items in a BOGO offer.

Walgreens Balance Rewards

Part of what makes Walgreens confusing is the fact that they essentially offer two different Rewards programs to customers. The first is the balance Rewards Program. It is required to enroll in this program in order to get the sale prices that are listed in the flyer. You can sign up for the card right at your local Walgreens store.

Balance Rewards is also a points based rewards program. Points can be earned by satisfying certain requirements when making purchases as listed in the weekly Walgreens sales flyer. Offers requiring the purchase of a certain product or products or spending a certain amount a specific group of products. Points can redeemed as dollars off a future purchase. You cannot earn points and redeem points during the same transaction. Points expire 12 months after earning. if you would like to redeem points you have accumulated just let the cashier know at checkout. They can tell you how much you have to redeem if you don’t know.

The points break down as follows:

Register Rewards

The other Rewards Program for Walgreens are Register Rewards or RR’s. Register Rewards are actually Catalina Coupons that are exclusive to Walgreens Stores. When you complete the requirements for a specific deal, a Register Reward coupon will print at checkout. You can find the deal requirements to get the RR advertised in the weekly sales flyer. In some cases there may be other National Catalina Offers that may not appear in the ad. You will rely on websites like ours to keep you informed of deals that may not appear in the flyer.

Simply purchase the product or products required to earn the Register Reward or you may be required to spend a certain amount on certain group of products to earn the reward. It will automatically print at checkout and you can use coupons and/or Balance Rewards on the items to reduce the out of pocket cost of items and the Register Reward will still print (alternatively you can use Register Rewards to pay for transactions where you are earning Balance Rewards points. The programs do not affect each other in that respect.)

Here’s a few fun facts about Register Rewards:

  • Register Rewards can only be redeemed at Walgreens.
  • RR’s can be redeemed on almost everything Walgreens sells except: dairy; alcohol; tobacco; contact lenses; stamps; phone/pre-paid/gift cards; money order/transfers; transportation passes; lottery tickets; charitable donations; prescriptions; pseudoephedrine or ephedrine products; immunizations, health tests or other healthcare items or services; Prescription Savings Club membership fee; clinic services.
  • Register Rewards are considered to manufacturer coupons and must be counted towards the number of coupons being used (since as we stated earlier you cannot use more coupons than products being purchased in the transaction.)
  • IMPORTANT: In most cases Register Rewards DO NOT ROLL. This means that you cannot repeat the same deal and pay using Register Reward earned by doing the deal in the previous transaction. This applies to all products included in that particular promotion – it doesn’t necessary have to be the same exact items being purchased that would prevent the RR from printing. There are some rare exceptions to this rule, but in general just assume that it won’t work unless it has been tested and confirmed as rolling. Even then, this can stop at any time, so use caution when attempting to Roll Register Rewards at Walgreens. You can however pay using Register Rewards earned from a different promotion to lower the cost of your purchase and the new Register Reward will still print.

Walgreens IVC’s, Store Coupons and Digital Coupons

In addition to accepting manufacturer coupons, Walgreens also offers store coupons! Like other stores, Walgreens store coupons can STACKED with manufacturer coupons that are available on the same item(s) for maximum savings! Store coupons can be found in a few different places. You may find some in the weekly sales flyer. The most abundant source of store coupons is the Monthly Sales Booklet. This booklet can generally be found on display at the front of the store or on the endcaps of the aisles.

IVC’s – Walgreen’s Instant Value Coupons:

The coupons found in this booklet are what we call “Instant Value Coupons” or IVC’s. IVC’s are awesome because they can be stacked with manufacturer coupons. Plus you only need to scan the IVC once and it will apply to each item purchased as stated on the coupon. e.g. If the IVC states you will save $2.00 on one item, then $2.00 will be deducted automatically on each of that item that is purchased. If the coupon states you will save $2.00 on two items, then $2.00 will be deducted automatically for every 2 of that item that is purchased.

IVC’s can be used on items that are on sale or clearance. Unlike manufacturer coupons which cannot be adjusted down if the coupon exceeds the price of the item (as stated in the Walgreens Coupon Policy), IVC’s will automatically adjust themselves down at the register to make the item FREE if the IVC is worth more than the item is priced at. Additional IVC coupons may also be found in other Walgreen booklets that can be found in the aisles at the store – generally they have them available for Cold & Flu, Pain Relief or Allergies.

Walgreens Digital Coupons:

You can also find IVC’s in Digital Form on the Walgreens Website or by using the Walgreens app. You can load them to your Balance Reward account to apply automatically at checkout. In addition to Digital IVC’s there are also digital manufacturer coupons available. You can simply load these coupons to your Balance Rewards account via the app or the website to apply automatically at checkout. FYI – Digital Manufacturer Coupons are single use only and you cannot stack them with paper manufacturer coupons for the same item(s.)

Walgreens Store Coupons:

You can also find store coupons in the Walgreens flyer to clip and use at checkout. Here’s an example f the type of coupons you may encounter. You can stack these store coupons with manufacturer coupons if there are any available. They always will state some sort of limit (unless you live in New Mexico apparently!)

Manufacturer Coupons

Walgreens accepts printable and regular manufacturer coupons. Combine manufacturer coupons with the various ways to save previously mentioned in this article for maximum savings! Apps like Ibotta, Checkout 51, MobiSave and Savingstar offer additional savings opportunities at Walgreens with cash back rebates! See our list of popular couponing apps here!
